What Is the Chinese Zodiac?

The Chinese zodiac — known in Chinese as Shēngxiào (生肖) — is a symbolic classification system that assigns each lunar year an animal from a cycle of twelve, repeating endlessly. Unlike the Western zodiac (which assigns signs based on the solar month), the Chinese zodiac operates on the lunar year, which means a person's "year" is determined by the lunar Chinese calendar cycle, which traditionally begins in late January or February of the corresponding Gregorian year.

The full system combines two interlocking cycles: the cycle of 12 animals (子午) and the cycle of 10 Heavenly Stems (天干, Tiān Gān), which encode the 5 elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water) in their Yang and Yin versions. When these two cycles combine, the result is a master cycle of 60 years containing 60 unique combinations — each with its own energetic characteristics, personality archetypes and compatibility relationships. This 60-year system is the foundation of the traditional Chinese calendar and remains one of the most widely-used symbolic tools across East Asia and Chinese diaspora communities worldwide.

🌙 The Critical January/February Rule

Chinese New Year does not coincide with January 1st in the Western calendar — it falls between January 21 and February 20 of each year, on a different date each year. If you were born between January 1 and the date of Chinese New Year of your birth year, your Chinese zodiac animal is the one from the year before the Gregorian year.

Example: If you were born on January 15, 1990, and Chinese New Year 1990 fell on January 27, your Chinese animal is from the year 1989 (Snake), not 1990 (Horse). Our calculator applies this adjustment automatically for all years from 1924 to 2031.

The 5 Elements — How They Color Your Animal

The element associated with your birth year doesn't replace or contradict the animal — it deeply colors it. Two Dragons of the same 12-year cycle but different elements (for example, a Wood Dragon and a Fire Dragon) will share the archetypal traits of the Dragon (ambition, charisma, vitality), but will express them in notably distinct ways. The Wood Dragon may be more creative and oriented toward organic growth; the Fire Dragon more passionate, direct and oriented toward immediate impact.

🌱

Wood (木)

Growth, creativity, expansion and flexibility. Wood animals have a natural orientation toward continuous learning and gradual flourishing.

❓

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my calculator show a different animal than I expected?

The most common reason is the Lunar New Year adjustment. If you were born in January or the first days of February, the Chinese New Year of your birth year may not have happened yet, which means your Chinese animal is from the previous Gregorian year.

For example: Chinese New Year 1990 fell on January 27. If you were born before January 27, 1990, your animal is from 1989 (Earth Snake), not 1990 (Metal Horse). Our calculator applies this adjustment automatically using exact historical Chinese New Year dates for every year from 1924.

What exactly is the 60-year cycle?

The 60-year cycle (甲子, jiǎ zǐ) results from combining two traditional Chinese cycles: the cycle of 12 animals (Earthly Branches, 地支) and the cycle of 10 Heavenly Stems (天干, tiān gān), which encode the 5 elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) in their Yang and Yin versions.

The least common multiple of 12 and 10 is 60 — which is why the complete cycle has 60 unique combinations and takes 60 years to repeat. It's the oldest year-numbering system in China and the foundation of the traditional Chinese calendar. When someone turns 60 years old in China, the "great birthday" (大寿, dàshòu) is celebrated precisely because they have completed a full 60-year cycle.

Is the Chinese zodiac the same as BaZi or the Four Pillars?

No — although they're related and use the same base elements (the 12 animals/Earthly Branches and the 5 elements/Heavenly Stems), they're systems of different complexity levels:

  • Chinese Zodiac (生肖): Uses only the Year Pillar — the animal and element of the birth year. It's the most accessible and widely known system, and is what this calculator computes
  • BaZi (八字) or Four Pillars of Destiny: Uses four pillars simultaneously — year, month, day and hour of birth — each with its own Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch. Requires exact birth time and produces a much more personalized and complex analysis

The Chinese zodiac is a popular simplification of the more complete BaZi system. The Year Pillar is just one-eighth of the complete analysis, but it provides useful and interesting information about base personality and life patterns.

Can Chinese animals be used for couple compatibility?

Yes — compatibility based on the Chinese zodiac is one of its most popular applications in Asian cultures. The triangles of affinity (groups of three animals that get along especially well) and the clash pairs (animals in direct opposition) offer a useful first reference framework.

However, compatibility based only on the year animal is a significant simplification. A complete BaZi analysis, which includes all four pillars of both people, offers a much more nuanced and accurate picture. Additionally, real compatibility in any relationship depends on factors that no astrological system can fully capture: communication, shared values, mutual respect and willingness for joint growth.

Is the data I enter sent to servers?

No. The calculator works entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your birth date is not sent to any server, not saved in cookies and not stored in any persistent mechanism. The results exist only in your browser's temporary memory while you have the page open. When you close or reload the page, the data disappears completely.
