Your Birth Chart, Explained
Discover Where Your Chart Has The Strongest Concentration.
A stellium generally describes a grouping of several planets in a particular zodiac sign or astrological house. Astrologers differ over the required number of planets and whether a group must also form close conjunctions.
Our Stellium Calculator lets you distinguish a same-sign stellium from a close conjunction cluster. These methods answer related but different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Enter planetary positions obtained from a natal chart. A planet's sign and degree are enough for sign-based analysis, while house-based analysis additionally requires accurate birth time, birthplace and house cusp information.
Use tropical zodiac positions if you want the conventional Western tropical interpretation. Do not mix tropical and sidereal placements in one calculation.
Astrology is a symbolic interpretive practice. A planetary grouping is a measurable feature of a chart, but claims about personality, destiny or future events are not established scientific conclusions.
Find Your Planetary Groupings
Select each planet's zodiac sign and enter its position within that sign. Leave planets you do not know unselected. Degrees must be at least 0 and less than 30.
Enter at least three planetary positions, then select Find My Stellium to see your results.
The sign calculation groups planets by zodiac sign. It does not require the planets to be conjunct or determine astrological houses.
Check Close Planetary Conjunctions
This analysis uses the same planetary positions entered in the Sign Stellium tab. It checks whether several planets fit inside a selected angular span along the zodiac.
A cluster can cross the boundary between signs. For example, a planet at 29° Pisces and another at 1° Aries are separated by only 2° along the ecliptic.
How The Orb Works
The selected value limits the entire angular span containing the planets, rather than allowing each neighboring planet to be that far apart. This prevents long chains of loosely connected planets from being reported as a single tight cluster.
Enter planetary positions in the first tab, then check for close conjunction clusters.
The selected angular span is a configurable screening rule, not a universal astrological definition. This tool compares ecliptic longitudes, not full three-dimensional planetary separation.
A Stellium Calculator is a tool for identifying groups of planets concentrated in the same region of an astrological birth chart. In many modern Western astrology approaches, three or more planets occupying one zodiac sign are described as a stellium, although other astrologers use stricter definitions.
The central idea is that several planetary symbols share a common context. A concentration in Capricorn, for instance, may be interpreted through themes of structure, responsibility and long-term planning. The individual planets still matter because the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars represent different functions within astrological symbolism.
There is no single universally accepted stellium rule. Some practitioners require four planets, others exclude the Sun or Moon, and some emphasize tight conjunctions rather than simple sign membership. A useful calculator therefore needs to state exactly which method it uses.
The Stellium Calculator on this page provides two separate approaches. The first counts planets within each zodiac sign. The second searches for planets packed into a configurable angular span, including clusters that cross from one sign into another.
What Counts As A Stellium In Astrology?
The most accessible definition is a group of at least three planets in one sign or house. However, this is a convention rather than a mathematical law. Traditional and contemporary astrologers may apply different thresholds, planetary inclusions and aspect requirements.
Consider a chart with the Sun at 8° Leo, Mercury at 15° Leo and Venus at 26° Leo. These three planets occupy Leo, so they meet a three-planet sign-based definition. Their total spread is 18°, however, meaning they would not qualify as one cluster under an 8° maximum-span rule.
This distinction is important. A sign stellium highlights shared zodiac symbolism, while a close conjunction emphasizes angular proximity. Both may be meaningful within an astrological reading, but neither automatically implies the other.
Can A Stellium Occur In An Astrological House?
Yes. In house-based astrology, several planets occupying one of the twelve houses may be described as a house stellium. Houses are conventionally associated with life areas such as identity, resources, communication, relationships and public activity.
House positions depend on a selected house system, accurate birth information and calculated house cusps. Because house boundaries do not always match zodiac sign boundaries, three planets can share a house while occupying different signs.
This calculator does not claim to determine house stelliums from sign and degree entries alone. Doing so would require additional chart geometry that the provided inputs do not establish.
Important Distinction
A sign stellium, house stellium and conjunction cluster are three related but different configurations. Always identify which one is being discussed before comparing interpretations.
Does Everyone Have A Stellium?
No. Some birth charts contain several concentrated planets, while others distribute planets more widely around the zodiac. A chart without a stellium is not incomplete or inherently weaker. Astrologers also examine aspects, house rulers, angles and other patterns when interpreting a natal chart.
Outer planets move relatively slowly, so their shared sign positions may occur across many births. For a more individually focused reading, some astrologers pay particular attention to the presence of faster-moving personal planets within a grouping.

01
What Does A Zodiac Sign Stellium Mean?
A zodiac sign stellium is a concentration of planets within one of the twelve zodiac signs. In symbolic astrology, this is commonly interpreted as a repeated emphasis on the qualities associated with that sign.
For example, three planets in Virgo may lead an astrologer to explore themes of analysis, precision, routines and service. Three planets in Sagittarius might instead draw attention to learning, exploration, beliefs and the pursuit of broader perspectives.
The specific planets change the reading. Mercury in Virgo may be discussed in terms of thinking and communication, while Venus in Virgo is conventionally associated with preferences, affection and relationships. A grouping should not erase these distinctions.
The Stellium Calculator counts qualifying planets by their selected zodiac signs. Its result is an exact grouping based on your entries, while any associated personality interpretation remains symbolic.

02
How Do Conjunctions Change A Stellium?
A conjunction occurs when planets occupy nearby positions in zodiacal longitude. Astrologers often consider close conjunctions especially significant because the planetary symbols are interpreted as interacting directly.
Suppose Mercury is at 12° Taurus, Venus at 15° Taurus and Mars at 18° Taurus. The three positions fit within a total span of 6°. They therefore qualify under an 8° cluster rule and also form a three-planet Taurus sign grouping.
Now consider Mercury at 28° Pisces, Venus at 0° Aries and Mars at 3° Aries. The total angular span is 5°, even though the planets occupy two different signs. A cross-sign conjunction cluster can recognize that proximity without incorrectly describing all three planets as belonging to Aries.
Orb conventions vary. Some astrologers use different allowances depending on the planets involved. This calculator applies one explicitly selected maximum span so its numerical results remain reproducible.

Why Do Personal Planets Matter In A Stellium?
The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars are commonly called personal planets or personal chart bodies in modern astrology. They move through the zodiac more quickly than the distant outer planets and are often given special emphasis in individual natal interpretations.
Jupiter and Saturn are sometimes called social planets, while Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are generally grouped as outer or transpersonal planets. The classification is interpretive and does not change their astronomical identities.
Three outer planets sharing a sign may satisfy a broad counting rule. However, because outer planets can remain in signs for years, that grouping may describe a large cohort rather than a highly individual configuration.
Use the personal-planet requirement when you want every reported group to contain at least one of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus or Mars. Alternatively, select the five-personal-planet mode to exclude the slower planets entirely.

04
How Is A House Stellium Different?
In a house stellium, the common feature is a shared astrological house rather than a shared zodiac sign. The first house is conventionally linked with identity and self-presentation, while the seventh is associated with partnerships and one-to-one relationships.
A tenth-house grouping is often interpreted through career, visibility and public responsibilities. A fourth-house grouping may be discussed in connection with home, family and private foundations. These themes vary by astrological school and chart context.
House calculations require the time and location of birth as well as a house system. Placidus, Whole Sign and Equal House systems can produce different house assignments for the same planetary positions.
For that reason, the Stellium Calculator does not substitute sign membership for house membership. To assess a house stellium, obtain a full natal chart with house cusps and inspect the actual house placements.

A Practical Calculation Method
How To Calculate A Stellium Step By Step.
First, obtain the planetary positions from a natal chart calculated for your birth date, birth time and birthplace. Use one zodiac system consistently and record each planet's sign and degree.
Next, enter the positions into the Stellium Calculator. Each planet has a sign selector and a degree field. A position of 14°30′ should be entered as 14.5 because 30 arcminutes equal half a degree.
Choose the minimum group size. Three planets is a common modern starting point, while four or five produces a stricter count. Decide whether to include outer planets and whether a personal planet must be present.
Calculate the sign groupings, then compare them with the conjunction analysis. The second calculation uses continuous angular longitude rather than simply counting planets inside one sign.
Step 1: Obtain accurate natal planetary positions.
Step 2: Enter each known sign and degree.
Step 3: Select your counting rules.
Step 4: Review qualifying sign groups.
Step 5: Check close conjunction clusters separately.
Do not interpret missing planets as absent from the birth chart. The calculator analyzes only the positions supplied, and incomplete entries can hide qualifying groups.
The Underlying Geometry
How Are Planetary Longitudes Compared?
Astrological zodiac longitude is commonly expressed as an angle from 0° to 360°. Each of the twelve signs occupies 30° of the zodiac, beginning with Aries at 0° and ending with Pisces immediately before 360°.
To convert a sign position into absolute longitude, multiply the sign's zero-based index by 30 and add the degree within that sign.
Longitude Formula
Absolute Longitude = (Sign Index × 30°) + Degree Within Sign
For example, Gemini is sign index 2. A planet at 12.5° Gemini therefore has an absolute longitude of 72.5°. A planet at 17° Gemini has longitude 77°. Their shortest angular separation is 4.5°.
For two planetary longitudes A and B, the shortest circular separation is the smaller of their absolute difference and 360° minus that difference. This handles the wraparound between Pisces and Aries correctly.
For three or more planets, a tight cluster must fit within one continuous arc whose length does not exceed the selected limit. This is more restrictive than allowing every adjacent pair to meet the limit independently.
These are straightforward angular calculations. The choice to interpret a close cluster as symbolically important belongs to astrology rather than geometry.
Understanding The Outcome
How Should You Interpret A Stellium?
Begin with the sign or house involved, then identify the planets that form the group. Each planet contributes a different symbolic function, so a concentration of Mercury, Venus and Mars is not read in exactly the same way as one containing the Moon, Jupiter and Saturn.
Consider the element and modality of the sign. Fire signs are conventionally associated with action and expression, earth signs with practical concerns, air signs with ideas and relationships, and water signs with emotional or intuitive themes.
Cardinal signs are often described as initiating, fixed signs as sustaining, and mutable signs as adapting. These categories offer a vocabulary for reflection, not a reliable personality diagnosis.
Next, examine whether the planets form close conjunctions and whether other planets aspect the group. A complete astrological interpretation considers the broader chart rather than assuming one concentration determines everything.
Finally, compare the interpretation with lived experience critically. Broad descriptions can feel personally accurate for many people. The Barnum effect is one reason generalized personality statements should not be treated as independent evidence.
Avoiding Common Mistakes
What Can Make A Stellium Result Misleading?
One common error is treating three planets in the same sign as automatically forming a tight conjunction. They may occupy positions nearly 30° apart. Another is overlooking a conjunction that crosses a zodiac boundary.
Incorrect degree conversion can also cause problems. A position written as 12°45′ is 12.75° in decimal notation, not 12.45°. Mixing these formats changes the angular separations.
Another mistake is comparing charts calculated with different zodiac systems or using inaccurate birth information. The Moon moves comparatively quickly, and its position may differ meaningfully when birth timing is uncertain.
Do not assume every astrologer includes the same bodies. Some definitions count only classical planets, while others include Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Asteroids, lunar nodes and chart angles are additional points that certain practitioners examine but are not counted by this tool.
Finally, remember that a stellium is not a scientifically established predictor of health, relationships, career success or future events. For astronomical background, explore NASA's Solar System resources and distinguish observed planetary motion from astrological interpretation.
05 / Useful Principles
Three Things To Remember About Stelliums.
A clear calculation is useful even when different astrological traditions interpret the same grouping differently.
Definitions Matter
A three-planet sign grouping and a tightly conjunct cluster are not identical configurations. The Stellium Calculator reports them separately and allows you to adjust the numerical threshold.
Accurate Inputs Matter
Correct zodiac signs, decimal degrees and consistent chart conventions are essential. Missing positions, incorrect birth data and mixed zodiac systems can change the result.
Interpretation Has Limits
Planetary concentration can be identified geometrically, but its proposed influence on personality or life events is not scientifically validated. Use interpretations as optional reflection rather than certainty.

Sign themes provide interpretive context only. The planets involved, their exact positions, aspects and broader chart structure influence how astrologers describe a grouping.
Example: A Four-Planet Capricorn Stellium
Imagine a natal chart with the Sun at 5° Capricorn, Mercury at 9° Capricorn, Venus at 13° Capricorn and Mars at 22° Capricorn. All four planets share Capricorn, so the configuration meets both three-planet and four-planet sign-based definitions.
The total spread from the first to the last planet is 17°. Under an 8° cluster-span rule, the Sun, Mercury and Venus form a qualifying three-planet cluster, while Mars falls outside that particular close grouping.
In a symbolic reading, the Capricorn sign concentration might invite reflection on structure, responsibility and long-term objectives. The close Sun–Mercury–Venus grouping would be considered separately from Mars's more distant position.
Example: A Stellium Crossing Two Signs
Now imagine Mercury at 27° Pisces, Venus at 29° Pisces and Mars at 2° Aries. Their absolute longitudes are 357°, 359° and 2°. Because the zodiac wraps at 360°, these positions fit into a 5° arc.
They qualify as a three-planet conjunction cluster with a maximum span of 5° or greater. However, only two planets are in Pisces and one is in Aries, so there is no three-planet same-sign stellium in this example.
This is why the Stellium Calculator offers two modes. The distinction prevents a close planetary concentration from being incorrectly assigned to one zodiac sign.
07 / Frequently Asked Questions
Stellium Calculator FAQs.
Answers about planetary counts, sign concentrations, conjunctions, house placements and interpretation.
What Is A Stellium In Astrology?
A stellium is a concentration of several planets in one zodiac sign, astrological house or closely connected region of the chart. Three planets is a common modern minimum, but some astrologers require four or more or apply additional conjunction rules.
How Does The Stellium Calculator Work?
The Stellium Calculator accepts planetary signs and degrees, groups selected planets by sign and identifies groups meeting your chosen minimum. A separate mode checks whether planets fit inside a specified angular span, including across sign boundaries.
How Many Planets Make A Stellium?
Three planets is a widely used starting definition. Other practitioners require four or five. The calculator allows three, four or five as the minimum so you can compare different conventions.
Do The Sun And Moon Count In A Stellium?
Many modern astrologers count the Sun and Moon alongside the planets, although technically they are not planets in astronomy. Some stricter definitions exclude one or both. This calculator includes them in its default ten-body selection.
Do Outer Planets Count In A Stellium?
Some astrologers include Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, while others give more weight to personal planets. Because the outer planets move slowly, shared placements can occur across many people born during the same period.
Can I Have More Than One Stellium?
Yes. A chart may contain multiple qualifying sign concentrations or angular clusters. Their existence depends on the number of bodies included and the definition used. The calculator reports distinct qualifying groups rather than assuming there can only be one.
Can A Stellium Span Two Zodiac Signs?
A close conjunction cluster can cross a sign boundary. However, under a same-sign definition, planets in different signs cannot all belong to one sign stellium. The calculator distinguishes these situations.
Is A Stellium Rare?
Its frequency depends on the definition, planetary selection and orb threshold. A three-planet same-sign grouping is easier to satisfy than a five-planet cluster contained within a few degrees. No single rarity estimate applies to every method.
Can A Stellium Be In The First Or Tenth House?
Yes. House stelliums can occur in any astrological house. Determining them requires house positions from a complete natal chart. This calculator analyzes zodiac signs and longitudes rather than independently calculating house cusps.
What If I Do Not Know My Birth Time?
You may still obtain approximate planetary sign positions for a date, but the Moon can move noticeably during a day and house positions may be uncertain. Use verified planetary positions and avoid claiming precise house placements without reliable birth information.
What Does It Mean If I Have No Stellium?
It simply means no planetary group meets the selected definition using the positions entered. A chart without a stellium is not deficient. Astrologers interpret many other features, including aspects, planetary rulerships and chart angles.
Is A Stellium Always Positive?
Astrology does not assign a universally positive or negative meaning to every stellium. Interpretations depend on the planets, sign, house, aspects and tradition. There is no scientific basis for treating a stellium as a guaranteed benefit or problem.
Does The Stellium Calculator Generate A Birth Chart?
No. It analyzes planetary positions you provide. It does not calculate ephemerides from birth dates or automatically determine houses. This prevents the tool from presenting guessed positions as accurate natal chart data.
What Is The Difference Between A Stellium And A Conjunction?
A conjunction concerns angular closeness between planetary positions. A stellium generally refers to a concentration of several planets. Three planets can share a sign without being closely conjunct, and close conjunctions can cross sign boundaries.
Can A Stellium Predict My Future?
No scientifically established method shows that stelliums predict personal events. Astrological interpretations can be used as symbolic prompts for reflection, but important decisions should rely on relevant evidence and practical circumstances.
What Zodiac System Does This Calculator Use?
The tool accepts the sign and degree values you enter. Its sign labels follow the familiar twelve-sign zodiac order. For consistent results, use positions from one system, such as the tropical zodiac, rather than combining tropical and sidereal entries.
