How Does The Astrology Aspect Calculator Identify Conjunctions And Oppositions?
A conjunction occurs when two celestial positions occupy approximately the same longitude. Its exact separation is 0°, although an astrologer may recognize a conjunction within a selected orb. For example, positions at 10° and 13° Aries form a conjunction with a 3° orb.
Astrological interpretations frequently describe conjunctions as blending or concentrating the symbolism of two planets. The particular reading depends on the planets involved. A Sun–Mercury conjunction, for example, is traditionally discussed differently from a Mars–Saturn conjunction, even though both share the same geometrical aspect category.
An opposition occurs at 180°, placing two points on opposite sides of the zodiac circle. If the Sun is at 20° Aries and the Moon is at 20° Libra, their separation is exactly 180°. The orb is therefore zero, and the opposition is exact.
Oppositions are commonly associated with contrast, polarity, awareness, and negotiation. In a natal chart, astrologers may interpret the relationship as a need to integrate different tendencies. In a transit chart, they may focus on the interaction between a moving planet and a natal placement.
Both aspects illustrate why identifying an angle is only the beginning of interpretation. An exact conjunction and an exact opposition are mathematically different, but neither establishes a predictable psychological or external outcome.
