AC, DC, MC And IC Lines Explained
AC or ASC stands for Ascendant, the eastern-horizon position where a body is rising. Astrologers associate this angle with identity, presence, self-expression, the body and how a person initiates experiences. A planetary ASC line is usually curved on a rectangular world map.
DC or DSC stands for Descendant, the western-horizon position where a body is setting. Traditional interpretations connect it with one-to-one relationships, collaborators, partners and encounters with other people. A Venus DC line is therefore interpreted differently from Venus AC, even though the planet is identical.
MC is the Midheaven or Medium Coeli, associated with the upper meridian. Its symbolic vocabulary concerns career, visibility, reputation, ambition and public contribution. IC, or Imum Coeli, corresponds to the lower meridian and is traditionally connected with home, family, emotional foundations and private life.
MC and IC lines commonly appear as straight north–south paths in a standard rectangular projection, whereas AC and DC lines tend to curve. A planet on the MC is crossing the upper meridian, which does not necessarily mean it is literally at the observer's zenith.
