Discover Your Lunar Mansion

Find The Star Division Occupied By The Moon.

In traditional Vedic astrology, the Moon's position along the sidereal ecliptic determines the birth nakshatra, also called Janma Nakshatra.

Each of the 27 equal divisions occupies 13°20′ of celestial longitude. Each nakshatra is further divided into four padas of 3°20′ each.

This interactive tool offers an approximate lunar-position calculation and a separate exact mathematical lookup for a longitude you already know.

Before You Begin

Enter the birth location's historical UTC offset, not your current location's offset. Daylight saving time and historical time-zone changes matter. Results near a boundary require verification with a precise ephemeris.

  1. Enter the local date and birth time.
  2. Choose the applicable UTC offset.
  3. Calculate the approximate Moon position.
  4. Read the nakshatra, pada and traditional ruler.

Calculate Your Birth Nakshatra

Use your recorded local birth time and the UTC offset that applied at your birthplace on that date. The astronomical estimate uses a simplified lunar model and an approximate Lahiri ayanamsa.

Your Birth Star Result Enter your birth details to estimate your nakshatra and pada.

This is an educational approximation, not a certified astronomical ephemeris or a full Vedic birth chart. It does not calculate an exact nakshatra transition time.

The Lunar Framework Of Jyotisha

What Is A Nakshatra Calculator?

A Nakshatra Calculator identifies which of the 27 equal lunar divisions contains the Moon's sidereal ecliptic longitude at a specified moment. In Vedic astrology, this placement is traditionally associated with the birth star and is used in discussions of personality, ritual calendars, naming customs and planetary periods.

The Sanskrit word nakshatra is commonly translated as a star or lunar mansion. Although the names have historical connections to stars and asterisms, the standard 27-part calculation divides the entire ecliptic into equal angular sectors rather than measuring the Moon's physical distance from particular stars.

Because the Moon moves relatively quickly against the zodiac, the birth nakshatra can change within a day. Accurate birth timing is therefore more important than it is for many date-based Sun-sign descriptions. A Nakshatra Calculator also distinguishes the four padas, which provide a finer subdivision of the Moon's position.

Vedic astrologers interpret nakshatras through planetary rulers, presiding deities, symbols and established textual traditions. These associations belong to an interpretive system rather than a scientifically demonstrated method of predicting personality or life events. The astronomical position and its traditional meaning should be understood as separate parts of the process.

For additional context, explore the Moon Sign Calculator or the Vedic Birth Chart Calculator. Both address related chart concepts, although their calculations and interpretation may use different settings.

02 / Four Foundations Of Birth Star Calculation

How Does A Nakshatra Calculator Work?

Understanding the Moon's longitude, the sidereal reference and the division formulas makes the result easier to interpret.

01Moon Position

How Is The Moon's Sidereal Longitude Determined?

The calculation begins with a precise moment expressed in Universal Time. The Moon's geocentric ecliptic longitude is estimated for that instant. An ayanamsa value is then subtracted from its tropical longitude to obtain a sidereal longitude, measured from the chosen sidereal zodiac origin.

For example, suppose a lunar calculation gives a tropical longitude of 150° and an ayanamsa of 24°. The resulting sidereal longitude is 126°. This is a mathematical illustration, not a live planetary position.

The tool uses a simplified lunar theory and an approximate Lahiri reference. Professional ephemerides include additional terms and more rigorous time-scale handling. For precise work, consult the NASA JPL Horizons ephemeris system, noting that sidereal conversion must still be handled appropriately.

0227 Divisions

How Does A Nakshatra Calculator Identify The Birth Star?

The 360° zodiac is divided into 27 equal nakshatras. Each occupies 360° ÷ 27 = 13⅓°, equivalent to 13°20′. The first sector, Ashwini, begins at 0° sidereal Aries. Bharani follows at 13°20′, and Krittika begins at 26°40′.

The zero-based division index is the whole-number part of longitude divided by 13⅓. Adding one gives the nakshatra's traditional sequence number. A sidereal Moon longitude of 47.5°, for instance, falls in Rohini, which spans 40° through 53°20′.

These equal angular boundaries are central to a conventional 27-nakshatra system. The separate historical 28-nakshatra tradition, which includes Abhijit, should not be confused with this equal-division method.

03Four Padas

How Are The Four Nakshatra Padas Calculated?

Every nakshatra contains four equal quarters called padas. Each pada spans 3°20′, giving 108 padas around the complete zodiac. To identify the pada, first determine the Moon's angular progress within its nakshatra, then divide that remainder by 3⅓°.

Consider a sidereal longitude of 47.5°. Rohini begins at 40°, leaving 7.5° of progress within the nakshatra. The first two padas cover 6°40′, so the Moon occupies Rohini Pada 3 in this example.

Padas are also connected with the nine navamsa divisions within each zodiac sign. This connection helps explain why traditional interpretations may associate different quarters of the same nakshatra with distinct qualities and naming syllables.

04Timing

Why Does Birth Time Matter For A Nakshatra Calculator?

The Moon moves approximately 13° along the zodiac per day on average, although its actual angular speed varies. Consequently, it spends roughly one day in each nakshatra and about six hours in each pada. These are broad averages, not fixed transition intervals.

A birth time recorded in the wrong time zone can shift the calculated longitude enough to change the pada or even the nakshatra. Historical daylight saving rules and offsets such as UTC+05:30 must be handled correctly. An unknown birth time should not be replaced with noon without acknowledging the uncertainty.

For a boundary-sensitive chart, use a reliable ephemeris and confirm the birth time. You can also compare the result with the Moon Sign Calculator, while remembering that Moon signs cover 30° and nakshatras cover 13°20′.

04 / Understand Your Result

How To Interpret A Nakshatra Calculator Result.

Learn what the birth star, planetary ruler and pada represent without treating symbolism as a proven prediction.

A Traditional Reading Framework

Begin With The Nakshatra, Then Explore Its Pada.

A Nakshatra Calculator result commonly includes the nakshatra name, its sequence number, planetary ruler and pada. Some systems also display the associated deity, symbolic image, zodiac sign, naming syllable or traditional temperament classification.

Begin by confirming the Moon's sidereal position. Next, read the nakshatra's traditional associations as themes rather than guaranteed characteristics. For example, Rohini is frequently connected with growth, fertility, creativity and cultivation, while Ashwini is associated with beginnings, movement and healing symbolism.

The planetary ruler is important in Vimshottari Dasha, a traditional sequence of planetary periods. The birth Moon's exact progress through its nakshatra is used to calculate the remaining balance of the first period. Knowing the ruler alone is insufficient to determine that balance.

Each pada adds a finer division. Some astrologers connect the pada to navamsa placement and traditional naming syllables. Interpretations can differ among schools, and the same birth star does not establish an individual's profession, health, compatibility or future events.

For broader chart context, compare your lunar placement with a Vedic Birth Chart. A single nakshatra represents only one part of the traditional interpretive framework.

Sidereal And Tropical Positions Are Different.

Most modern Western Sun-sign presentations use a tropical zodiac, while conventional nakshatra calculations use a sidereal reference. The difference is expressed through ayanamsa. Mixing the two coordinate systems can produce an incorrect birth star even when the date and time are correct.

Near A Boundary, Small Errors Matter.

An approximate Moon longitude can be sufficient for exploration when the result lies comfortably inside a nakshatra. Near a pada or nakshatra boundary, even a small angular discrepancy may change the classification. Verify those cases using a higher-precision calculation and consistent ayanamsa.

05 / Essential Principles

Three Things To Remember About Nakshatras.

These distinctions help you understand the astronomical calculation and its traditional use.

27 Equal Lunar Divisions

The conventional zodiac contains 27 nakshatras of 13°20′ each. These are equal longitude divisions, not 27 equal periods of clock time. The Moon's speed changes throughout its orbit, so the duration of each transit varies.

108 Equal Padas

Four padas belong to each nakshatra, creating 108 divisions of 3°20′. A pada identifies a precise angular quarter. The boundary between adjacent padas can be crossed within hours, making birth-time accuracy especially relevant.

One Moon, Many Traditions

Names, rulers, symbols and deities come from established astrological traditions. Astronomical coordinates can be calculated, but symbolic interpretations are not scientifically validated personality tests or reliable predictions of future events.

The nine planetary rulers repeat three times in the sequence Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury. This is also the order used in the traditional Vimshottari Dasha framework. Rahu and Ketu are lunar nodes rather than physical planets, but they are treated as grahas in Jyotisha.

Names and English transliterations vary. For example, Shravana may appear as Shravan, and Mrigashira as Mrigasira. These spelling variations do not change the corresponding longitude intervals. The Nakshatra Calculator uses the conventional 27-part sequence shown above.

Worked Example: Finding Rohini Pada 3

Suppose the Moon's sidereal longitude is 47°30′, or 47.5°. Divide 47.5 by 13⅓ to identify the fourth nakshatra, Rohini. Its beginning is 40°, so the Moon has progressed 7°30′ within Rohini. Since each pada spans 3°20′, that position lies in Pada 3. The traditional planetary ruler is the Moon.

For a technical overview of lunar motion and astronomical coordinates, the U.S. Naval Observatory Astronomical Applications Department provides authoritative astronomy resources. Astronomical reference data and traditional astrological interpretation serve different purposes.

07 / Frequently Asked Questions

Nakshatra Calculator FAQs.

Answers about birth stars, lunar longitude, padas, time zones and traditional Vedic astrology.

What Is My Birth Nakshatra?

Your birth nakshatra is the lunar mansion containing the Moon's sidereal ecliptic longitude at the time of birth. Enter your birth date, local time and historical UTC offset in the Nakshatra Calculator to obtain an approximate result. Verify boundary-sensitive placements using a precise ephemeris.

Can I Find My Nakshatra Without A Birth Time?

You may be able to narrow the possibilities using the birth date and location, but an exact answer is not always possible. The Moon can cross a nakshatra boundary during the day. If your birth time is unknown, compare the lunar position throughout the possible birth interval rather than assuming a particular hour.

What Is The Difference Between Rashi And Nakshatra?

A rashi is one of 12 zodiac signs, each measuring 30°. A nakshatra is one of 27 lunar divisions, each measuring 13°20′. The Moon's rashi and nakshatra describe the same lunar position using different divisions of the zodiac.

What Does Pada Mean In Vedic Astrology?

A pada is one of four equal quarters of a nakshatra. Each covers 3°20′ of longitude. Traditional astrologers connect padas with navamsa divisions, specific interpretations and sometimes naming syllables. The precise Moon longitude determines the pada.

Does A Nakshatra Calculator Use The Sidereal Zodiac?

Yes. This Nakshatra Calculator estimates the Moon's sidereal position using an approximate Lahiri ayanamsa. The longitude lookup also expects sidereal coordinates. Other ayanamsa choices may shift the result, particularly near boundaries.

Why Do Two Nakshatra Calculators Give Different Results?

Differences may arise from birth-time conversion, historical daylight saving rules, ayanamsa settings, lunar ephemeris precision, or rounding. Some tools may also use different definitions of the Moon's position. Compare their settings before deciding which result to use.

How Long Does The Moon Stay In One Nakshatra?

On average, the Moon travels through approximately one nakshatra per day. Its actual orbital speed varies, so the duration is not always 24 hours. Each pada generally lasts several hours, but its precise transit duration must be calculated for the relevant date.

What Is The Difference Between Nakshatra And Birth Star?

In common Vedic astrology usage, birth star or Janma Nakshatra refers to the nakshatra occupied by the Moon at birth. The word nakshatra can also describe any of the 27 lunar divisions independently of an individual's birth chart.

Can My Nakshatra Change During My Lifetime?

Your natal nakshatra remains associated with the Moon's position at your birth moment. The transiting Moon continues moving through the nakshatras, however, and occupies different lunar mansions over time. Natal placement and current transit are different concepts.

What Is Abhijit Nakshatra?

Abhijit appears in certain historical and traditional systems that recognize 28 lunar mansions. The standard 27-nakshatra equal-division calculation used here does not insert Abhijit as an additional equal sector. Mixing the systems would change the calculation framework.

Can Nakshatra Predict Marriage Or Career Success?

Traditional astrologers may discuss nakshatras in relationship or career interpretations, but there is no reliable scientific evidence that birth nakshatras predict those outcomes. Treat such interpretations as cultural or personal reflection rather than as a basis for major decisions.

Is This Nakshatra Calculator Astronomically Exact?

No. The birth-date mode uses a simplified lunar model and approximate sidereal correction. It is intended for educational exploration, especially away from division boundaries. The direct longitude mode accurately identifies the nakshatra and pada for the sidereal longitude supplied, but does not verify that longitude.
