A Practical Calculation Method
Understand The Difference Between A House Cusp And The IC.
The Equal House calculation begins by converting your Ascendant to a zodiacal longitude between 0° and 360°. Aries starts at 0°, Taurus at 30°, Gemini at 60°, and each following sign adds another thirty degrees. The degrees and minutes within your Ascendant sign are then added to that sign's starting longitude.
The fourth-house cusp is found by adding 90° to the Ascendant longitude. If the result is 360° or greater, subtract 360° to return to the beginning of the zodiac. The sign containing the resulting longitude identifies the Equal House fourth-house cusp.
The formula can be written as Fourth-House Longitude = (Ascendant Longitude + 90°) mod 360°. Here, mod 360° means taking the remainder after complete rotations around the zodiac. The result remains within the standard 0° to 360° circle.
Whole Sign Houses uses a different rule. Instead of preserving the Ascendant's exact degree, it counts three complete signs forward and sets the fourth-house cusp at the beginning of the resulting sign. For example, a 5° Leo Ascendant gives 0° Scorpio as the Whole Sign fourth-house cusp and 5° Scorpio in Equal Houses.
The Imum Coeli is not defined by either of these formulas. It is the ecliptic intersection associated with the lower local meridian. Calculating it requires the relevant astronomical orientation, including the local sidereal time and geographic latitude, or equivalent chart data.
This distinction matters because an astrologer using Placidus may place the fourth-house cusp at the IC, while someone using Whole Sign Houses may find the IC inside another house. Neither placement should be silently substituted for the other.
The Astrodienst reference on astrological houses provides additional background on house divisions and the variety of systems used in chart interpretation.
Why Birth Time Matters
The Ascendant changes as Earth rotates, so an inaccurate birth time can produce a different Ascendant degree or even a different rising sign. A fourth-house calculation derived from that Ascendant inherits the uncertainty.
When the birth time is unknown, avoid presenting a specific house placement as established. A noon chart or estimated birth time does not automatically provide reliable house cusps.
Why House Systems Differ
House systems divide the celestial sphere or zodiac according to different geometric principles. Whole Sign Houses uses complete zodiac signs, Equal Houses uses equal thirty-degree divisions, and quadrant systems apply additional astronomical constructions.

What This Tool Does Not Calculate
The calculator does not derive an Ascendant from a birth date, generate planetary positions, identify fourth-house occupants, or calculate the IC. It also does not implement Placidus or Koch cusps.
Its purpose is to calculate the fourth-house boundary accurately for the two supported systems when a valid tropical Ascendant is supplied.
