Your Relationship Axis, Explained

Discover The Point Opposite Your Ascendant.

In a standard natal chart, the Descendant marks the western intersection of the ecliptic and horizon. It lies exactly 180° from the Ascendant and ordinarily defines the seventh-house cusp.

The calculator applies this geometric relationship. It does not guess your rising sign from your Sun sign or infer an exact chart from an incomplete birth time.

  • Identify your Descendant zodiac sign.
  • Calculate its precise degree and minute.
  • View the Ascendant–Descendant axis.
  • Read the traditional partnership interpretation.
  • Understand what additional chart details matter.

For a precise result, obtain your Ascendant from a natal chart calculated with your correct birth date, time, birthplace, and time-zone history.

Calculate Your Descendant

Use the Ascendant sign, degree, and minute displayed in your birth chart. Degrees range from 0 to 29, and minutes range from 0 to 59.

The calculation uses the standard 180° opposition between the Ascendant and Descendant. It does not calculate planetary placements or intermediate house cusps.

What The Seventh House Represents

What Is A 7th House Astrology Calculator?

A 7th House Astrology Calculator is a tool for identifying the Descendant, the zodiac point directly opposite the Ascendant. In most familiar Western natal-chart house systems, this point begins the seventh house. Astrologers traditionally associate that house with committed relationships, marriage, business partnerships, contracts, negotiation, and interactions with identifiable others.

The Ascendant describes the eastern horizon at birth, while the Descendant identifies the western horizon. Their opposition forms one of the chart's principal axes. Although astrologers interpret this axis symbolically as self and other, its geometric relationship is straightforward: the two points are separated by half of the zodiac circle.

The calculation is not a relationship prediction. It establishes a chart position from an existing Ascendant. Interpretations of partner preferences, compatibility, and relationship experiences belong to astrology traditions rather than scientifically validated personality or forecasting methods. Your actual relationships depend on communication, circumstances, personal choices, and many factors beyond a chart.

A complete seventh-house reading usually also examines planets occupying the house, the traditional or modern ruler of its cusp sign, aspects to that ruler, and the house system used. This tool provides a dependable starting point without inventing those missing chart placements.

Explore the difference between a calculated zodiac position and the interpretive traditions surrounding the seventh house.

1The Descendant

How Does The Descendant Describe Partnerships?

The Descendant is the degree opposite your Ascendant. In traditional chart interpretation, astrologers examine its sign for themes associated with one-to-one relationships. Aries may suggest directness, Libra cooperation, Capricorn responsibility, or Pisces empathy. These are symbolic associations, not fixed requirements for a compatible partner.

For example, an Aries Ascendant places the Descendant in Libra. Astrologers often interpret this as an axis between personal initiative and shared decision-making. The theme is not that every Aries-rising person must marry a Libra, but that balancing independence with mutual consideration can be a useful reflection.

The seventh house also extends beyond romance. It is traditionally connected with business agreements, clients, formal alliances, and negotiations. Some classical approaches include open adversaries, emphasizing that the house concerns visible one-to-one interactions, whether cooperative or confrontational.

2Opposite Signs

Why Are The First And Seventh Houses Opposite?

The first and seventh houses are anchored to opposite points on the horizon. The Ascendant marks the rising intersection of the ecliptic; the Descendant marks the setting intersection. Consequently, adding 180° to the Ascendant's zodiac longitude locates the Descendant, regardless of the rising sign.

Suppose your Ascendant is 12°20′ Taurus. Taurus begins at 30° zodiac longitude, so the Ascendant is 42°20′. Adding 180° gives 222°20′, which corresponds to 12°20′ Scorpio. The degree and minute remain identical because opposite signs are separated by exactly six 30° signs.

This calculation is different from measuring the seventh-house width. In quadrant house systems, intermediate cusps may be unevenly spaced. The seventh cusp remains opposite the Ascendant, but the next house boundary depends on the selected system and the complete birth-chart geometry.

3House Rulers

What Does The Seventh-House Ruler Reveal?

After identifying the Descendant sign, astrologers commonly examine its planetary ruler. In traditional Western astrology, Aries and Scorpio are ruled by Mars, Taurus and Libra by Venus, Gemini and Virgo by Mercury, Cancer by the Moon, Leo by the Sun, Sagittarius and Pisces by Jupiter, and Capricorn and Aquarius by Saturn.

Modern astrology sometimes substitutes or supplements Pluto for Scorpio, Uranus for Aquarius, and Neptune for Pisces. These different conventions can produce different interpretations. A careful reading states which rulership system it uses rather than treating one method as universally accepted.

Consider a Gemini Descendant, traditionally ruled by Mercury. An astrologer might explore communication, intellectual curiosity, and adaptability as relationship themes, then examine Mercury's sign, house, and aspects in the complete chart. Without those placements, the calculator cannot establish how Mercury is configured for a particular person.

4Whole Chart

How Do Planets And House Systems Change The Reading?

A planet in the seventh house is traditionally interpreted as emphasizing certain experiences within partnerships. Venus may be associated with affection and harmony, Saturn with commitment or responsibility, and Mars with initiative or conflict. These meanings are contextual; no individual placement guarantees a particular outcome.

House systems also matter. In Placidus and several other quadrant systems, the Descendant is the seventh-house cusp. In whole-sign houses, the entire sign opposite the rising sign constitutes the seventh house, while the Descendant degree may fall somewhere inside that sign. The same sign relationship survives, but the definition of the cusp changes.

Birth-time uncertainty matters because the Ascendant changes with Earth's rotation. A chart calculated for a rounded or estimated time may give a different rising degree, potentially even a different sign. For a complete interpretation, verify the birth details before relying on exact house positions.

How To Use A 7th House Astrology Calculator Correctly.

Accurate inputs and a clearly defined house system are essential when comparing chart positions.

The Calculation Method

Convert The Ascendant Into Its Opposite Zodiac Longitude.

The tropical zodiac is divided into twelve signs of 30° each, beginning with Aries at 0°. An Ascendant's absolute zodiac longitude equals its sign index multiplied by 30°, plus the degree and minute within the sign. Sign indexes run from Aries at zero through Pisces at eleven.

The Descendant longitude is obtained by adding 180° and reducing the result modulo 360°. This keeps the answer within one zodiac circle. Divide the resulting longitude by 30° to identify the sign, then use the remainder for the degree within that sign.

Descendant Longitude = (Ascendant Longitude + 180°) mod 360°

For example, 27°45′ Leo equals 147°45′ zodiac longitude. Add 180° to obtain 327°45′, or 27°45′ Aquarius.

Because 180° equals exactly six signs, the simplest method is to move six signs forward while preserving the degree and minute. An Ascendant of 0°00′ Cancer therefore produces a Descendant of 0°00′ Capricorn. An Ascendant of 29°59′ Pisces produces 29°59′ Virgo.

This method assumes a valid Ascendant position from a chart using the same zodiac convention. It is not a substitute for computing the Ascendant itself from astronomical time, location, and coordinate transformations.

Chart Settings

Check Your House System.

Placidus, Regiomontanus, Campanus, and other quadrant systems generally place the seventh cusp at the Descendant. Whole-sign houses instead begin the seventh house at 0° of the sign opposite the rising sign. The Descendant remains the same astronomical point, but its relationship to the house boundary differs.

Planetary Context

Look At The Ruling Planet.

The cusp sign identifies the traditional seventh-house ruler. Its actual placement requires the full chart. For a Taurus Descendant, Venus is the traditional ruler; for a Capricorn Descendant, Saturn is the ruler. Interpretations depend on the planet's sign, house, aspects, and the astrological framework being used.

Relationship Context

Distinguish A Natal Chart From Synastry.

A natal seventh-house position describes a symbolic area of one person's chart. Synastry compares placements between two charts, while composite charts use a different relationship-focused technique. None of these methods provides scientifically established evidence that a partnership will succeed or fail.

05 / Useful Principles

Three Things To Remember About Your Seventh House.

Separate the precise geometry of a birth chart from the traditions used to interpret it.

The Opposition Is Exact

The Ascendant and Descendant are always separated by 180° of zodiac longitude. The 7th House Astrology Calculator preserves the input degree and minute when identifying the opposite sign. A valid 15°40′ Virgo Ascendant produces a 15°40′ Pisces Descendant.

The Interpretation Is Symbolic

Traditional meanings describe themes rather than measurable personality traits. A Scorpio Descendant may be associated with emotional intensity or trust, but the placement does not establish that someone will experience betrayal, marry a particular sign, or attract a specific type of partner.

The Full Chart Adds Context

House rulers, planets, aspects, and house-system choices affect an astrologer's interpretation. An empty seventh house does not mean a person will remain single, and a planet occupying the house does not guarantee marriage. The Descendant is one component of a larger chart.

Every row represents a pair of signs separated by six positions in the zodiac. The ruler column follows traditional planetary rulership rather than the modern outer-planet alternatives. The themes are conventional interpretive descriptions, not diagnostic statements about a person's behavior or romantic future.

If you use the 7th House Astrology Calculator with an exact Ascendant degree, the resulting Descendant retains that degree. For example, 4°15′ Aquarius corresponds to 4°15′ Leo. If only the rising sign is known, the opposite sign is certain within the chosen zodiac framework, but the exact degree cannot be recovered.

07 / Frequently Asked Questions

7th House Astrology Calculator FAQs.

Answers about the Descendant, relationships, house systems, birth times, and interpreting your seventh-house sign.

What Does The Seventh House Represent In Astrology?

In Western astrological traditions, the seventh house is associated with marriage, long-term relationships, business partnerships, contracts, and direct interactions with others. It is frequently contrasted with the first house, which represents the individual. These meanings are symbolic traditions rather than scientifically established predictions.

How Does The 7th House Astrology Calculator Work?

The 7th House Astrology Calculator takes the Ascendant sign and optional degree and minute, then identifies the point exactly 180° opposite. Moving six signs forward gives the Descendant sign. The degree and minute stay unchanged. It does not independently calculate the Ascendant from birth details.

Can I Calculate My Seventh House Without My Birth Time?

If you already know your accurately calculated Ascendant sign, you can identify the opposite sign without re-entering your birth time. However, calculating the Ascendant from scratch generally requires an accurate birth time, date, and location. An unknown birth time can make the rising sign and seventh-house position uncertain.

Is My Seventh-House Sign The Same As My Descendant Sign?

In common quadrant house systems, the Descendant sign is the sign containing the seventh-house cusp. In whole-sign houses, the seventh house consists of the entire sign opposite the rising sign, and the Descendant lies within that sign. The opposite-sign relationship remains the same, although the exact cusp definition differs.

Does The Seventh House Predict My Future Spouse?

No scientifically validated method establishes that the seventh house predicts the identity, personality, appearance, or arrival date of a future spouse. Astrologers may use its sign and ruler as symbolic relationship themes, but those interpretations should not be treated as reliable forecasts or guarantees.

What If My Seventh House Has No Planets?

An empty seventh house is common and does not imply an absence of love, marriage, or meaningful partnerships. Astrologers often interpret the cusp sign and its ruling planet even when no natal planets occupy the house. A full chart is needed to examine those additional factors.

What Is The Difference Between The Fifth And Seventh Houses?

The fifth house is traditionally associated with pleasure, creativity, recreation, and romantic enjoyment. The seventh house focuses more specifically on one-to-one commitments, formal partnerships, and contracts. Both can appear in relationship interpretations, but they emphasize different symbolic topics.

Can My Sun Sign Tell Me My Seventh House?

No. Your Sun sign and rising sign are different chart measurements. The Sun sign is based on the Sun's zodiac longitude, while the Ascendant depends on the eastern horizon at your birth time and location. People with the same Sun sign can have different rising signs and therefore different Descendants.

Why Do Different Birth Charts Show Different House Placements?

Different house systems divide the chart differently. Time-zone errors, daylight-saving adjustments, incorrect birth coordinates, and tropical-versus-sidereal zodiac settings can also produce differences. Compare the chart settings and original birth data before deciding which positions to interpret.

Is The Descendant Always Exactly Opposite The Ascendant?

Yes. Geometrically, the Ascendant and Descendant are opposite intersections of the ecliptic with the local horizon, so their zodiac longitudes differ by 180°. Their zodiac signs are therefore six signs apart. This is the fixed mathematical relationship used by the calculator.

Does A Libra Descendant Mean I Should Date A Libra?

No. A Libra Descendant means the Ascendant lies in Aries within the same zodiac framework. Astrologers traditionally associate Libra with balance and cooperation, but that does not make Libra partners automatically more compatible or exclude other signs. Relationship quality cannot be determined from one chart placement.
