What Is Your Sun Sign?
Your Sun Sign — often called simply your "zodiac sign" or "star sign" — is the position of the Sun in the zodiac at the exact moment of your birth. The Sun moves through the twelve signs of the Western zodiac throughout the year, spending approximately one month in each sign. Because the Sun is the most dominant celestial body of our solar system — the source of all light and life — its position at birth is considered the central factor in Western astrology and the most natural starting point for exploring it.
When someone says "I'm a Scorpio" or "I'm a Capricorn," they're describing their Sun Sign. It's the only astrological calculation that doesn't require knowing the time or place of birth — just the date is enough to determine it with certainty in the vast majority of cases (with the exception of people born on the days of transition between signs, where the exact hour can be decisive).
In Western astrological tradition, the Sun symbolizes the central consciousness, vitality, self-expression and fundamental identity of a person. The sign the Sun was in at birth describes the characteristic way that person seeks to shine in the world, the type of experiences that most nourish and develop them, and the basic energetic quality of their ego and conscious will.
📅 How the Calculator Determines Your Sign
The calculator maps your birth date to one of the twelve segments of the tropical Western zodiac. Each segment lasts approximately 30 days. The Sun changes sign approximately around days 19-23 of each month — if you were born on those transition dates (called "cusps"), the exact hour can sometimes be decisive. For most birth dates, however, the date alone gives a definitive answer.
The 12 Sun Signs — Complete Profiles
Each Sun Sign is a unique combination of element (Fire, Earth, Air or Water), modality (Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable) and ruling planet. This triad of qualities is what creates the twelve distinct archetypes — it's not just the sign's symbol, but this specific combination that determines the energetic character of each one.
Aries
The bold pioneer of the zodiac. Aries leads with instinctive courage and a capacity for initiative rarely found in other signs. Where others deliberate, Aries acts. Greatest strength: courage. Greatest challenge: learning patience and collaboration.
Taurus
The sensual artisan of the zodiac. Taurus has an extraordinarily developed relationship with the tangible pleasures of being alive — beauty, quality materials, music, good food. Its reliability is legendary and its patience almost infinite.
Gemini
The versatile communicator of the zodiac. Gemini has a mind that connects ideas from distinct fields with unique agility and enjoys intellectual variety more than any other sign. Its ability to learn fast and make the complex accessible is a genuine talent.
Cancer
The intuitive nurturer of the zodiac. Cancer has extraordinary ability to read the emotional state of those around them and create spaces where people feel genuinely safe. Its emotional memory is deep and its loyalty unconditional.
Leo
The radiant creator of the zodiac. Leo radiates a quality of vitality and confidence that makes people want to approach and follow. Ruled by the Sun itself, Leo has an innate gift for magnetic presence and leadership that inspires through authenticity.
Virgo
The master artisan of the zodiac. Virgo applies its mercurial intelligence to the concrete world with analytical precision that identifies what can be improved in any situation. Its genuine spirit of service generates trust wherever it is.
Libra
The aesthetic diplomat of the zodiac. Libra has a natural ability to see multiple perspectives simultaneously and create the bridges that transform conflict into collaboration. Ruled by Venus, it experiences beauty primarily through relationships and exchange.
Scorpio
The deep transformer of the zodiac. Scorpio has access to the most complex dimensions of human experience — the processes of death and rebirth that are the real texture of any life lived with honesty. Its loyalty is total and its insight penetrating.
Sagittarius
The adventurous philosopher of the zodiac. Sagittarius has a natural orientation toward the bigger picture — the search for meaning that transcends everyday details. Its optimism is genuine and contagious. Ruled by Jupiter, expands everything it touches.
Capricorn
The legacy builder of the zodiac. Capricorn instinctively understands that the most significant achievements are built brick by brick over years. Its ambition is patient — the mountaineer who climbs the tallest mountain without rush but without pause.
Aquarius
The humanist innovator of the zodiac. Aquarius thinks genuinely originally and dedicates that originality to collective progress. Sees the world not as it is but as it could be. The paradox is being the sign most oriented toward humanity but sometimes difficult in individual relationships.
Pisces
The visionary artist of the zodiac. Pisces has access to a creative imagination of unique richness and a depth of empathy that allows resonance with any person's inner experience. The twelfth sign contains within itself something of all the previous ones.
The Four Elements
The four elements are the oldest and most fundamental division of the zodiac. Each element groups three signs that share an essential way of experiencing and responding to the world — a basic energetic "temperament" that expresses itself in different ways in each sign of the group but has a recognizable common root.
Fire
Action, passion and enthusiasm. Fire signs are the initiators and natural leaders of the zodiac — those with the energy to begin what others only conceive. Yang energy: extroverted, expansive, oriented toward visible expression.
Earth
Stability, practicality and reliability. Earth signs are the builders and custodians of the zodiac — those who instinctively understand that meaningful achievements are built over time. Yin energy: receptive, patient, oriented toward tangible reality.
Air
Intellect, communication and connection. Air signs are the communicators and thinkers of the zodiac — those who enjoy the exchange of ideas more than the accumulation of things. Yang in social expression: extroverted, versatile, oriented toward relationship.
Water
Emotion, intuition and depth. Water signs are the empaths, healers and artists of the zodiac — those who feel what others can't always articulate. Essential yin: receptive, sensitive, deeply connected to inner experience.
The Three Modalities
While elements describe what kind of energy a sign has, modalities describe how that energy expresses itself in relation to time and change. Each element manifests through the three modalities: there is one Cardinal, one Fixed and one Mutable sign in each element.
Cardinal — Initiate
Cardinal signs start each season: Aries begins spring, Cancer summer, Libra fall, Capricorn winter. They share the energy of beginning — initiators and leaders. Gift: getting things started. Challenge: maintaining what was begun.
Fixed — Sustain
Fixed signs occupy the heart of each season, when the seasonal quality is fully established. They share the energy of consolidation and persistence — those who maintain and deepen what Cardinals started. Gift: loyalty. Challenge: flexibility.
Mutable — Adapt
Mutable signs close each season, at the moment of transition toward the next. They share the energy of adaptation and flexibility — those who prepare the ground for change. Gift: versatility. Challenge: finding consistent focus.

⚠️ Why Dates Vary Slightly Year to Year
The Sun doesn't change signs at exactly the same moment every year. Variations occur due to leap years, the Earth's elliptical orbit and time zones. If you were born on a "cusp" date (typically the 19th-23rd of any month), the exact hour can determine your sign. The ranges above are standard conventions — for cusp dates, use the calculator with your exact date, and consider using the Ascendant calculator for absolute precision.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is time of birth needed for the Sun Sign?
For the vast majority of births, the date alone is sufficient to determine the Sun Sign with certainty. The exception is people born on "cusp" dates — the days of transition between signs, typically the 19th-23rd of each month. On these days, the Sun changes sign at a specific astronomical moment that may fall before or after midnight depending on your time zone, which can affect which sign you actually are.
If you were born on a cusp date and want absolute certainty, use our Ascendant calculator that includes birth time and location for full precision. For all other birth dates, this calculator gives a definitive answer.
Are Sun Sign and Star Sign the same thing?
Yes — both terms refer to the same concept: the zodiac sign the Sun was in at the moment of your birth. "Star sign" is the more informal popular term, while "Sun sign" is the more technically precise term, since it explicitly indicates that we're talking about the position of the Sun (not the Moon, the Ascendant or any other planet).
In a complete natal chart, every planet — including the Moon — has its own "sign," so the term "Sun sign" avoids ambiguity. They're used interchangeably in everyday conversation.
Why do the boundary dates vary slightly between sources?
The Sun changes sign at specific astronomical moments each year, and those transitions can fall on different days depending on the year. There are three main reasons:
- Leap years: The extra day every four years shifts all subsequent calculations slightly
- Elliptical orbit: The Earth doesn't orbit the Sun in a perfect circle, creating small variations in sign-change moments
- Time zones: A change happening at 23:00 in one zone might happen at 02:00 next-day in another zone
For simplicity, we use standard ranges (e.g., Aries March 21 – April 19). The differences from year to year are usually one day or less, but if you were born on a cusp date, exact time matters.
What's the "best" Sun Sign?
No sign is better or worse than another — each sign expresses a genuinely valuable archetype with its own strengths and challenges. This is one of the most important truths of astrology: the diversity of the twelve signs is not a hierarchy but a mosaic in which each piece is necessary for the whole.
Aries needs Libra to learn collaboration; Libra needs Aries to develop assertiveness. Capricorn needs Cancer to nurture its inner life; Cancer needs Capricorn to structure its sensitivity. The apparent "competition" between signs in popular astrology is a trivialization of a much richer and more nuanced system.
